Competency based training requires “hands-on” learning and instruction in techniques and treatments. We want you to experience and learn the techniques and treatments to the best of your ability. For this reason, we limit the number of participants to ensure plenty of one-on-one learning as well as providing a safe, healthy environment. The very nature of hands-on learning necessitates all participants follow strict health protocols that meet or exceed safety measures mandated by the various health departments within Canada and the provinces.

ABOUT
Karen graduated from the University of Manitoba (U of M), School of Medical Rehabilitation in Physical Therapy in 1995.
Early in her career, she developed a special interest in vestibular disorders. This led her to the USA for competency based training from leading vestibular researchers, such as Dr. S. Herdman, Dr. S. Whitney, Dr. R. Clendaniel, Dr. F. Horak, and others.
A desire to further pursue research in vestibular disorders led Karen to the Master of Science (Rehabilitation) degree, graduating in 2013. Her research was an innovative physiotherapy treatment protocol for those suffering peripheral vestibular disorders.
In 2004, Karen founded Physiotherapy ‘n Balance and the clinic was located on Corydon Avenue in Winnipeg, MB. Desiring to concentrate on research and teaching, she retired from the private practice. Physiotherapy ‘n Balance remains active at a new location and under new ownership of Aynsley Fraser Kiernicki since late 2020.
In 2016, Karen developed Fundamentals of Vestibular Rehabilitation: A Competency-Based Course and teaches throughout Canada. The course is intended for physiotherapists/physical therapists who have been practicing for a minimum of 1 year. In 2020, a hybrid version of the “Fundamentals” course was developed and combines on-line learning and in-person instruction of skills, techniques and treatments.
Utilizing her extensive training and 30 years clinical experience, Karen currently treats patients at Pure Lifestyle in Winnipeg, MB. Mentoring physiotherapists who have completed the her competency vestibular rehab training, speaking engagements, and consulting with other medical professionals in the area of vestibular rehab keep her busy. Karen has previously taught in the Master of Physical Therapy program in the College of Rehabilitation Sciences at the U of M.
Currently, we are working on an Advanced Vestibular Rehabilitation course and anticipate it will be available later in 2025. Keep watching for this exciting development or contact us for more information.
